The Escapist (Deeply intense and perplexing thriller! )
Starring: Brian Cox, Damian Lewis, Joseph Fiennes, Seu Jorge, Liam Cunningham, Dominic Cooper, Vinnie McCabe, Ned Dennehy and Steven Mackintosh
The story is about a man who is in prison for life and after not hearing from his family in fourteen years he receives a letter stating that his daughter is very ill and close to death. After reading the letter he decides to try and come up with a plan to break out of prison so that he can have one last chance with his daughter to set things right.
This is one hell of a good thriller! I was captivated and drawn to this movie from the start and wasn’t budging from my seat for a moment. The movie starts off with some prisoners trying to escape, then as the movie progresses there starts to be a series of flashbacks to before the escape and the planning of it all. I have to say that in the first half hour to 45 minutes I was a bit confused. As the film goes on more and more pieces of the puzzle start to fit together and you begin to understand.
Brian Cox in the leading role is simply outstanding, I don’t think anyone could of played his part better. The supporting cast all were important and remarkable making us aware of the harsh reality of prison life. The music and the setting in the underground tunnels of London all adding immensely to this tense and exciting risky venture of trying to escape into the outside world.
There are so many twists and turns and truly an exceptional perplexing thriller, so chilling and with a tenuous and unexpected payoff in the end. It is definitely a movie that I would watch again and maybe again in hopes of picking up clues, understanding more or just something that I may have missed. I give it a rating of a 8.
